The D365 Updates to Plan Around in 2027

Many of these features are live now, and more arrive by spring. Here is what matters for finance, supply chain and project teams heading into 2027.

A person types on a laptop keyboard while digital icons representing process updates, checklists, and synchronization float above the screen.

Your 2027 plan shouldn't be built around the ERP you have today. It should be built around what that ERP will be able to do by the time the plan kicks in. Microsoft doesn't ship Dynamics 365 updates once in a while anymore. It ships them all the time, and it has moved to a single roadmap that updates continuously. That's great news if you have a team watching every change, but it's a problem if you're a CIO with a full calendar and no time to read hundreds of pages of release notes.

So we read them for you. Below are the capabilities we think matter most as you head into 2027. Some are live today, and others are in preview or arriving by spring. We've left out the small stuff and kept the things that will change how your people work next year.

The biggest shift heading into 2027 is agents. An agent is a piece of AI that doesn't just answer questions but actually does work inside your system, like matching records, drafting a reply or flagging a problem before it grows.

Microsoft now calls this "agentic ERP," and it's more than a buzzword. The Dynamics 365 ERP connection for Copilot is now generally available, which means AI tools can read your ERP data, take approved actions and link back to the exact record they used. When Copilot tells your controller that a vendor balance looks off, it can show where that number came from. That matters a lot when your auditors ask the same question six months later.

Many companies are still treating AI as a side project. In D365, it's moving into the core of how the system runs.

Finance is getting some of the most useful upgrades. The Finance Agent now works inside the tools your team already lives in, including Excel, Outlook and Teams. It can help with reconciliations, prepare data, explain variances and handle collections follow-ups. Your AR clerk doesn't need to jump between five screens to chase a late payment anymore.

The Account Reconciliation Agent can now clear exceptions in bulk, with limits and notifications you control. Accounts payable is getting smarter too, as AI reads incoming invoices and suggests how to code them, so more invoices flow through without anyone touching them.

Microsoft is also rebuilding financial journals to handle higher volumes and messy multi-company setups. Your team will be able to see intercompany transactions, create accruals and preview allocations before posting anything. If you run several legal entities across countries, you know how much time that saves at month end.

On compliance, France's e-invoicing and e-reporting support is now generally available, with more countries on the roadmap. Governments everywhere are moving toward digital tax reporting, and the rules keep changing. Having that built into your ERP beats scrambling for a bolt-on every time a regulator updates a mandate.

Supply chain leaders have always had the same wish. They want to know what's coming before it hits. D365 is taking real steps in that direction.

Demand planning now uses AI to spot seasonality, trends and patterns in your data, and it can pull in outside signals like inflation, pricing and weather. A distributor who knows a cold snap is coming can stock up before the rush instead of after it.

A new procurement feature, now in preview, traces what happens when a supplier changes a purchase order. Push a delivery back a week and the system shows you which sales orders, production runs and transfers get hit. Before, someone had to figure that out by hand, usually after a customer called to complain.

There's also a new supplier portal in preview that brings onboarding, quotes, purchase orders and invoices into one place, plus new rental management tools for companies that rent out equipment and need contracts, billing and maintenance to work together.

If you run a professional services firm, Project Operations picked up tools you've probably been asking for. Change orders now follow a clear, trackable process that flows straight into billing, so scope creep doesn't quietly eat your margin. Subscription billing is on the way for recurring work. A new staffing view puts assignments, bookings and available capacity on one timeline, which makes utilization decisions far less of a guessing game.

Business Central used to be seen as the "small" option, the system you outgrow. That label doesn't fit anymore, and the agents are a big reason why.

The Payables Agent reads vendor invoices as they land in your inbox, pulls out the details and drafts the purchase invoice for your team to review. It gets faster with vendors it already knows, so the routine bills from your regular suppliers move through with very little effort. The Expense Agent does the same for employee spending. Your people snap a photo of a receipt on their phone, and the agent handles the rest, from expense reports to travel requests. Other agents are taking routine sales and purchase work off your team's plate, like turning a customer email into a quote.

Just as important, you stay in charge. A single pane shows every task your agents are working on, your team can review what an agent created right on the page before it's posted and you can stop an agent's work with one click. That's the kind of control a CFO wants before letting AI touch the books.

The core system is getting stronger too. Manufacturers get new tools for subcontracting and for checking the quality of incoming goods and materials. Finance teams get faster reports and better controls over which periods are open for posting, while auditors get new ways to review user permissions and approval workflows. For companies operating across borders, e-invoicing support keeps expanding, including France and Spain's new Verifactu rules. If you're still running an older on-premises system, Microsoft has also made it easier to move to the cloud from almost any SQL database.

Put it together and Business Central is a serious platform for growing companies that want enterprise-grade tools without enterprise-level complexity.

Here's where many companies will get into trouble. When AI can take actions inside your ERP, you need tight control over what it's allowed to do. Microsoft is adding new role-based controls that let you set extra limits when someone works through Copilot or an agent. In plain terms, you can let the AI read a lot while letting it change very little.

That's the right design, but it only works if someone sets it up well. Rolling out agents without a clear security model is like handing a new hire the keys to every room on day one. Get the permissions right first, then turn on the automation.

None of these features help you if your company is running an old version of Dynamics, a heavily customized on-premises system or an ERP from a vendor that's slowing down. The new AI tools are built for the cloud, and they work best on clean data and standard processes.

That's why the gap between companies on modern ERPs and everyone else is widening every quarter. The leaders get new capabilities every month, while the laggards get another round of patches.

Microsoft recently brought its Dynamics 365 partners together in Copenhagen, the city where its ERP story began more than 30 years ago. That story matters to us. Our founder, Jesper Kehlet, was part of the original team that built Axapta, the system that became Microsoft Dynamics Finance and Supply Change Management. We've watched this platform grow from the very first line of code, and we know which new features will pay off for your business and which ones can wait.
